Perennial herbs; stems erect, to 1.5(–2) m tall, much branched in upper portion, woody at base, obtusely quadrangular, slightly 4-sulcate, finely striate.
Petiole 0.5–3.5 cm long, broadly alate toward apex, densely pubescent; blade ovate to ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate, 3.5–10 cm long, 1.5–4.5 cm wide, apex subacuminate, base cuneate, margins grossly incurved-serrate, thin chartaceous.
Panicles terminal, loose, 10–20 cm long, composed of 5- to many-flowered cymes; peduncle of cymes 0.5–1.5 cm long, pedicels 1–3 mm long, both densely pubescent; lower foliaceous bracts similar to cauline leaves, short petiolate, longer than cymes, upper bracts reduced upward, lanceolate to linear-laceolate, almost equalling peduncles; bracteoles 1–3 mm long, pubescent; calyx campanulate, ca. 1.5 mm long, densely whitish pubescent and glandular outside, glabrous inside; teeth 5, erect, narrowly triangular, subequal; corolla to 6 mm long, purple, puberulous outside, glabrous inside; tube saccate on upper part near base, ca. 3 mm long, reflexed, equally 4-parted at apex, lower lip broadly ovate, ca. 3 mm long, concave; stamens and style included.
Nutlets broadly ovoid, 1.5 mm long, rounded, whitish-barbate at apex.
